But how do you identify a finance manager who can take their team to the next level?
Ask these 3 questions during the interview to find out.
Interview Question #1: What is the difference between a manager and a leader?
A finance manager needs to plan and coordinate the various moving parts of the finance department. But what truly defines a great finance manager from their less capable brethren is the ability to achieve buy-in from those they lead. A true leader understands how to empower their team by connecting each individual’s deliverables to their personal strengths. The result: the team buys into the overall vision of the organization and strives to achieve it.
Interview Question #2: You discover an error that a colleague has made that could cause significant impact to the organization. What do you do?
This question digs down into the candidate’s problem-solving and communication capabilities. What are the steps they go through to solve the problem? How do they communicate with their colleague and do they present a united front to management? Their answer will reveal their views on leadership, ethics and problem-solving – all information you need when making a hiring decision.
Interview Question #3: Why does this role make sense for you at this time in your career?
Your candidate’s answer will tell you if they’re already invested in the organization. Ultimately, you’re looking for an answer that reveals strategic, long-term thinking. After all, you need someone who will deliver in the short-term, but also be a valuable asset for years to come.
A strong finance manager can inspire a team to produce exceptional results. Ask questions designed to elicit views on problem-solving, communication and strategic thinking. Above all, ask about the candidate’s views on leadership. If their answer aligns with the company’s core values and overarching vision, chances are you’ve found yourself someone who can guide a team to greatness.
